As Philippe Gourdon, product designer, says, “Light is a passion, an inspiration, a must in the world of creation.” Light has led and guided him in 10 years of luminous creation for several European companies.

He was the first to develop a recessed mural light, with a simple poetic glass sheet laid on the bulb. The very first light structure to follow architectural curves. He also introduced the first collection of interchangeable recessed lights, the first double-light desk lamp and the first mobile garden floor lamp.

Among his rewards, Gourdon was nominated for the Compasso d’Oro in Milan and appeared in the “mutant” materials exhibit at the MOMA in New York. His work is on permanent display at the Pompidou Center in Paris. He was awarded the first prize at the “Freeway Light Fixtures” contest at Eurodisney as well as silver and gold lamps at the International Light Fair in Paris.

As far back as I can remember, two memories of light come to mind.

The first was lying in the back seat of my parents' car as we drove through the illuminated tunnels of the outer boulevard (long before the ring road existed), witnessing a kaleidoscope of light, with shadows dotting the interruptions in this fascinating moving spectacle.

The second memory was at night, in the darkness of my childhood bedroom, following the faint brush of light from my miniature locomotive. The game consisted in imagining circuits that would produce random animations on the walls, which had become improvised screens.

Both may well have been the beginnings of my fascination with animated light, which later took shape when I discovered the early kinetic works of Nicolas Schöffer and Julio le Parc.
